The Preston Towne Market is a seasonal, outdoor farmers’ market that is open Thursdays from 9 am to 2 pm in Central Park in Preston. The market, founded in 2010, features many vendors and hosts events. The market runs from June to October, and focuses on providing food, and any other products, that are locally sourced. The Preston Towne Market is a cash-only market and is entirely non-smoking.
Artists are encouraged to create their art in the market, with no fee and no booking needed. Musicians are also a part of the market, with past performers including the Ever Lovin’ Jug Band and the musical duo Sue Windover and Sandy MacDonald. Events for children have included the Preston Towne Centre Summer Spray Pad, face painting, and story time with the Cambridge Library, along with children’s performer Mr. Chris and the Gassy Bubbles.
Events for all ages have included yoga in the park and a taste-off, where chefs from local restaurants create dishes with food available from the market. The Preston Towne Market has also been involved in charity events, such as their donation box for the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank, which raised over 700 pounds of food in 2016.
The market has taken part in teaching events, such as “What to Do with your Harvest,” which was put on in partnership with the Cambridge Self Help Food Bank and the Preston Community Garden at the Cambridge Library. Other events with the Preston Community Garden have included a free organic squash planting activity and a corn roast. Community guests at the market have included Cambridge Cycling, Langs Community Centre and Waterloo Region Waste Management.
The Preston Towne Market rules specify that vendors are not allowed to re-sell produce that they have purchased, unless it is from nearby farms. The products sold by vendors are subject to approval by the market.
