Cambridge Celebration of the Arts is an annual, free exhibition focusing on works of art judged in competitions for various categories. The event includes special art experiences for audiences, and also includes child-centred and family-centred activities.
Performers in the past have included Vat Blues Band, Sarah McGrath, Penny and Pound Theatre Production, and the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra. Performances take place on three different stages simultaneously, giving visitors the ability to move freely between shows. Visual artists at the event have included Will Eby, Leo Claessens and Jim Blomfield. Literary artists have included Barb Day, Jackie Loomer-Kruger, and April Bulmer. The celebration also showcases youth art pieces from various secondary schools, including Galt Collegiate Institute, Preston High School and Père-René-de-Galinée Secondary School.
There are many options for food and drink at the event, including The Cambridge Mill Restaurant, Kiwi Gastropub, Pit Stop Grill and Boston Pizza. Amsterdam Brewery and Jackson-Triggs Wines have also been present, offering alcoholic drinks.
Inclusion in the event as an artist is based on the approval of an independent juror. Jurors can change every year, but past jurors have included Diane Palfrey, a published poet and two-time first place winner in the Cambridge Festival of the Arts Poetry Contest; Laurie Nolan, a graduate of Sheridan College and a commercial artist since 1983; and Grant Gimpel, a local music instructor who also plays in several groups and has a standing position with the Royal Canadian Navy.
Cambridge Celebration of the Arts has created a promotional video showcasing some of what occurs at the event. It demonstrates some of the variety involved in the festival, with bagpipers, firefighters, dancers, a youth choir, and bands playing on the stage. The video gives a clear idea of what the festival is like and what visitors can expect!
