Artist Concept Statement:
Chelsea’s concept begins with the acknowledgement that Waterloo Region is on Treaty land. With this understanding, she has created a painting of Indigenous peoples holding hands around a symbolic circle. Chelsea’s style is almost dreamy, despite sometimes having a somber undertone. The colours she chose symbolize hope, and her pieces appear as a work in progress – just like peace and unity. The purpose of this piece is the message of acknowledgement, truth, progression and unity.
Reason for Participating in Art Fresco Public Art Project:
Chelsea saw the Art Fresco Project as a great way to extend the formidable language of unity and togetherness. She has always relied on art as a form of expression and believes the timing of this project could not have come at a more important time – a time when we need unity more than ever.
Artist Background:
Chelsea was born and raised in Waterloo Region. She grew up in Mill Park, right beside Homer Watson Gallery and comes from a family of very creative and artistically-inclined folks. She travelled and worked around the world and then came home and settled into family life with her three daughters and husband in the Chicopee area. She currently teaches at a school in Guelph, where she spends half days in the library working with students on various projects, usually concentrating on the arts. She has taught visual arts for many years and is a part of the Kitchener-Waterloo Society of Artists. She is very involved in her school and school board’s commitment to equity, and as the equity representative, works inclusively with the staff and students to create art works for Black History Month and Indigenous awareness.
