Artist Concept Statement:
Waterloo Region’s many parks, green spaces and the Grand River offer a rich diversity of plants and animals that make the region beautiful and unique. Luke’s concept shows this through an illustration that focuses on the natural beauty of our area.
Reason for Participating in Art Fresco Public Art Project:
Luke has lived in Waterloo region for over 20 years and loves its active arts community. For Luke, showing Indigenous perspective and culture in this area has been very important, and the Art Fresco Project was an excellent opportunity for him to share this. His recent work painting a piano in public with the City of Waterloo was an amazing experience that received excellent feedback and engagement, and he hopes this Project will be another fantastic opportunity for him to represent his art and culture.
Artist Background:
Luke Swinson is an Anishinaabe illustrator who is a member of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, and resides in Kitchener. Luke’s art reflects his passion for cultural preservation and progression.
