Artist Concept Statement:
The patterns painted on the picnic tables are composed of Islamic calligraphy and Persian vivid colours. The patterns evoke a sense of identity in residents and in newcomers, who are already aware of the cultural background of the patterns. This helps to foster a sense that the community is embracing them as well. At the same time, individuals who are not familiar of the cultural background might find these patterns to be dynamic, harmonic, and spirited in nature. Behnaz hopes the lively colours capture the attention of the people who use the tables, and inspire their imagination.
Reason for Participating in Art Fresco Public Art Project:
When Behnaz arrived in Canada two years ago, she experienced homesickness, loneliness, and sadness, and there were no visual elements that could help her feel connected with her neighbours. The Art Fresco Project presented an opportunity to use art to help citizens connect with the region. The patterns painted on these tables represent two core values of Canadians, namely multiculturalism and inclusion.
Artist Background:
Behnaz was born and raised in Iran and moved to Canada in 2018. She received her BA in Fine Arts from the University of Guilan, Rasht, Iran. She expresses her artistic ideas and visions through various media and techniques, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, and installation.
