#MyJazzIs: The 2019 Sunlife Financial Uptown Waterloo Jazz Festival

July 19-21, 2019 in Uptown Waterloo

“When you begin to see the possibilities of music, you desire to do something really good for people.” – John Coltrane

How do you like your jazz? Are you a fan of a more traditional style, or do you take your jazz with a side of electro-funk? No matter the style you prefer, the 2019 Sun Life Financial UpTown Waterloo Jazz Festival features a line-up that will be, as John Coltrane says, ‘really good for people’!

The theme of this year’s Festival is Community and Dialogue – an idea that is just as important in everyday life as it is in musical performance. Artistic Director Lukas Bouda has put together a program of world class performers that is diverse, not only from a perspective of where they come from, but also from the diversity of jazz styles they bring to the Festival. Headlining Friday night are Loop Doctors – a jazz duo from Hungary whose Electro-Jazz-Funk will have everyone hopping. Saturday evening headliner Steven Taetz is a traditional jazz singer who will perform the standards as well as his own originals that sound like they should be standards. Closing up the Festival on Sunday afternoon is John MacMurchy’s Art of Breath – a group of Toronto jazz musicians who are on a musical ‘journey’ where deep grooves, Brazilian rhythms, and straight-ahead jazz are all part of the path.

The performers on stage in between the headliners are equally as diverse. If you prefer your jazz music with a bit of ‘bite’, be sure and catch Toronto’s Snaggle – Canada’s answer to Snarky Puppy – and its brash and infectious brand of jazz-funk. Venezuelan born Eliana Cuevas has never been constrained by genre boxes in her song writing, and draws freely from jazz, Latin, folk and world music. FreePlay is an innovative a capella duo that makes use of loops to build songs right before your ears, while Clefs of Moher is a local group with Celtic influences. You can see the entire 2019 lineup on the website.

The Sun Life Financial UpTown Waterloo Jazz Festival takes place outdoors at Waterloo City Centre. The Festival runs Friday, July 19th from 4-10:30 pm, Saturday, July 20th from 3-10:30 pm, and Sunday, July 21st from 12-4 p.m. Planning on biking to the Festival? Take advantage of the City of Waterloo’s onsite Bike Valet service. And remember – this 3-day festival is free to attend!
