Spring means that it’s “Time-for-a-Beer-on-the-Patio-Season.” And surely, as the sun gets warmer over the next several weeks, it’s getting to be a very good time to think about finding cold beer in Waterloo Region.
And, they’re off! The season is underway at Grand River Raceway, where racing enthusiasts of all ages are always treated a great experience. Read on to find out more!
1 – Grand River Raceway opens for the season on June 1. Races take place most Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights all summer long
15 – This year mark’s Grand River Raceway’s 15th season
10 – Visitors are treated to 10 races per night
90 – The number of horses that race each night (9 horses per race/ 10 races per night)
2 – The age Standardbred horses (the horses you’ll see at Grand River Raceway) begin racing. Most standardbreds are reddish brown in colour (called bay), but some are also grey, roan (speckled grey) and chestnut (red). Standardbreds can compete until they are 14 years of age
18 – The maximum number of characters (including spaces) that can be used when naming a standardbred horse. Horses are named by their breeders or owners, and proposed names must pass a number of criterion set out by the national breed registry. Names are often a combination of the horse’s dam (mother) and sire (father) names.
3 – The number of restaurants at Grand River Raceway. Choose from the Captain’s Quarters Dining Room, offering a $19.99 buffet overlooking the racetrack; the Getaway Restaurant with its a la carte menu; and the Lighthouse Restaurant which offers finger foods and a licensed trackside patio
70,000 – The approximate combined purse (dollars) the horses compete for each night
14 – The number of Fun & Frivolity Friday Nights this season! Fridays include a fun, interactive area for the kids called The NEIGHbourhood, as well as a live broadcast from 7pm – 10pm with 107.5 DAVE ROCKS.
19 – The age you must be to enter the slots gaming floor. The slots at Grand River Raceway are operated by Elements Casino (a Great Canadian Gaming Corporation brand)
