When you walk into Angie’s, you are reminded of something familiar – Even if you’ve never been before. You’re greeted with a smile, easy-going conversation and the smell of freshly brewed coffee, recently made pies, cinnamon buns, and butter tarts (raisin, pecan, coconut, or plain) made from scratch that morning! They can also make other delicious baked goods at your request.
Angie’s is a fixture along Erb Street in Waterloo Town Square. It really feels like home. In fact, it was the family home for Angie and Bill Graham, which they purchased in 1947, then turned into a restaurant in 1962. When you enter Angie’s, you cross over what was once their front lawn and you dine in what was their sun room and living room. Angie passed away on November 2, 1997, and her daughter Teresa, her husband Bob and their daughter Suzanne now run the restaurant, continuing the tradition of serving hearty meals to patrons.
The most popular menu items include the all-day breakfast, but they also offer a selection of luncheon menu options, such as wraps, sandwiches, salads, and fish and chips. Nothing in this German tradition-loving community compares to the German Special, which includes hand breaded and pounded pork schnitzel, smoked farmer sausage, sausage, two eggs any style, homemade toast, and home fried potatoes. The dish was featured on the Food Network’s Great Canadian Cook Book with Chef Lynn Crawford in 2015.
What we now know affectionately as “Uptown Waterloo” was once a manufacturing and brewing district. There was no Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, no Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, no Shopify, no Centre for International Governance. That came later, much later. The Seagram’s distillery and Carling brewery were nearby, and the Snider’s Flour Milling Company and Waterloo Manufacturing stood where Waterloo Town Square is now. Erb street at Caroline was lined with single-family homes as far as the eye could see. For years, Angie’s fed the blue collar workers of Waterloo a hearty and fulfilling meal before or after their shifts. Now Angie’s feeds all types of visitors from blue and white collar workers to students, athletes and families.
Over the years, Angie’s has seen a tremendous amount of change and 2016 was no exception. LRT construction made for a tough year, as many of the access streets in and out of their area of Uptown Waterloo were closed. Regardless of its surroundings, Angie’s has always held a reputation for quality food and instilling a sense of belonging in its visitors.
In 2017, Angie’s celebrates the milestone of 55 years in business. Over the years, the landscape and clientele may have changed, but one thing remains the same – You can still rely on Angie’s for a homestyle, filling meal and a great start to your day.
